In ancient era, Sabong was under “KALINGA” the Orissa state ruled by the king “ASHOKA”. During the period , “DANTAPUR” was the capital of SABONG. According to some historical clarification the name “SABONG” was just after the inclusion with “Bangadesh”.On the other hand some raised that the name “SABANGA” was fixed from ‘Shumbha-Banga’. It is also the historical information that the Army chief of the Nawab- Sirajuddalya, Mohanlal who faught for the country against the East India company in 1757 at Palasi ground was the son of the SABONG.
Many temples and Idols and their glimpses still exist at Sabong now. One temple of Sri Sri ‘ganaki ballav Jiu at Tilantapara was established by the Zaminder Late Brindabon Maity, the zaminder of the area in the year 1811. The temple was decorated with Terakota art with different –craftmanships. Still it bears the glimpses of its glorious past artistry. The idol of Sri Sri Ganaki ballav is worshipped daily according to the practice of ‘Baishnvism’. Every year of local festival i.e the’ Rashjatra Mela’ is arranged to glorify the solemnty of the idol as well as temple.Another big festival i.e Mela is arranged in the bank of river ‘keleghai’ from the end of the day of Bengali ‘Pous’ month i.e from 1st Magh and continued for a fortnight namely ‘TULSICHARA MELA’. It is said that Mela was first introduced by Gokulananda Maharaj. It is also believed that ‘He’ was by profession the store keeper of ‘Bhunia’ zaminder family of kolanda. Some portion of land was under the big zaminder Taraknath Maity (Dutta). Now this portion already has been donated by Late Pulin behari Dutta& Late Pramatha nath Dutta to ‘SARTA TARAKNATH INSTITUTION(H. S. School).At twilight of his life he began to produce miracles by showing spiritual magic power over the invalids.meanly people used to go to him to seek his grace for the permanent cure from Filariasis.He first started the Tulsichara Mela on 1st Magh of Bengali year.In the olden age no visitor stayed in the mela because of the fear of tiger (Heyna) and poisonous snakes and insects. His gurrial(Samadhi) is still at the bank of Keleghai river near kolanda.Basically he was the follower of Vaishnavism founded by ‘Sri Sri Chaitannya Mahaprabhu’.
The heritage and spirit of the mela is still being continued.The village of Kasba Sabong under Sabong 8 no. Gram Panchayet is graced with another historical temple, namely ‘Kopallochan Mandir’, which is situated at the bank of ancient Kapaleswari river and mainly noted and worshipped for its mythical and spiritual importance.It is believed that ‘Kopallochan’ who is none but ‘Lord SHIVA’ and Goddess ‘Devi DURGA’ who shelters on the head of ‘Lord SHIVA’ used to play with the wild waves of ancient Kapaleswari and because of the mythical practice the place was named as ‘Kopallochan’.
